Serve Globally

Our World Mission work in Honduras takes three forms.

Honduran Medical Mission

Each year since 1995, a team of medical, dental, education, and construction volunteers travels to Honduras for a week of support in a village near Puerto Cortes known as Colonia Episcopal. Colonia Episcopal is a community of approximately 100 homes built by the Episcopal Diocese of Honduras and Habitat for Humanity to house those displaced by Hurricane Mitch. The medical and dental team provides a clinic to provide much needed health and dental care and medicines. If a nearby village has been identified by the municipality, the team will travel and support that village as well. The mission team attends to approximately 200 patients each day. The education team works with the local K-6 village school to provide a week of enrichment through grade-appropriate lessons in science, math, and art. If construction projects are identified, the team will organize materials and volunteers to complete a school or community project.

Sloan Clinic

In addition to the Medical Mission, we support a clinic in Colonia Episcopal to address the ongoing medical needs of the village. Sloan Clinic is staffed with a nurse, doctor, and dentist and maintains a well-stocked pharmacy. It meets twice each month to monitor chronic conditions, new pregnancies and births, local health outbreaks like Dengue, and general health needs.

Educational Sponsorships

Through sponsorships provided by St. Thomas parishioners, students are encouraged and supported to continue their education beyond the customary K-6 village school. These sponsorships help students travel to the high school and purchase uniforms and supplies. In addition, a technical school relationship has been established, and qualifying students may elect to enter instruction in electricity, welding, refrigeration, or auto mechanics. There are also programs which we support in nursing, cosmetology, and marine/port management. The technical school option has been exciting because it typically results in jobs—a true blessing in Honduras. In the 2022 school year, there are 22 sponsored students. For more information about becoming a sponsor, contact The Rev. Jeannie Randall, Deacon at youth@stthomashuntsville.org.
